FAQs for the Portland Hop-on Hop-Off Trolley

1. What days of the week do you run?

Answer: We operate our driver guide narrated hop-on/hop-off tour every day of the week from May 24th through October 5th with the exception of June 7th and June 14th when local parades make it impossible to offer a consistent tour.

2. What time do the tours begin each day?

Answer: During May, June, September and October they begin at 10:00 am each day.  During July and August they begin at 9:00am each day.  They leave Pioneer Courthouse Square the top of every hour with the last one departing at 4:00 pm.  We are at each stop once every hour.    The 4:00 pm departure makes final stops around town arriving back at the Pioneer Courthouse Square at 5:20 pm.

3.  How much does it cost?

Answer: For a one-day pass with all day hop on and hop off privileges the adult fare is $32.  A child between the ages 6 and 12 is $16.  Children under 6 are free.  A two-day adult pass is $39 with the children’s pass being $20.

4.  Where do I buy my ticket and get on the tour?

Answer: The ticket booth is located at Pioneer Courthouse Square at SW Broadway and SW Yamhill Street (approximate street address being 780 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97205).  The ticket booth is in the south west corner of the Square and is across the street from the front of the downtown Nordstrom’s store.  You may also purchase a ticket from the tour driver at any of the stops.

5. Are reservations required on the Hop-On/Hop-Off tour?

Answer: Reservations are not required on the Hop-On/Hop-Off tour. Just come by the sales booth at Pioneer Courthouse Square or buy a ticket from the driver at any of our stops. The schedule page shows when a trolley is at each stop.

6. If I buy a Two Day Pass do I have to use the two days consecutively?

Answer: Subject to operating dates, no.   A Two Day Pass Trolley Pass can be used on two consecutive days or two non-consecutive days.  If you want to use them on non-consecutive days you must request a non-consecutive two day pass at the time the ticket is picked up or purchased at our sales booth on Pioneer Courthouse Square.  The non-consecutive ticket is not transferable and second day must be used within 6 days of the first day.

7. How often do the trolleys depart?

Answer: The trolleys leave Pioneer Courthouse Square the top of every hour with the last one departing at 4:00 pm.  We are at each stop once every hour.  The 4:00 pm departure makes final stops around town arriving back at the Pioneer Courthouse Square at 5:20pm

8. How often do the trolleys go by each of the 12 stops?

Answer: We are at each stop once every hour.  See the schedule page for the time we are at each stop.

9. How many on/off stops are on the Portland tour loop?

Answer: In addition to the point of origin at the Pioneer Square ticket booth, there are currently 11 stops (12 total).  One of those stops is the Chinese Garden/MAX light rail stop for service to and from the Convention Center and Lloyd Center and the hotels in the Convention Center and Lloyd Center area.

10. Is there a narrated tour?

Answer: Yes, the tour is narrated in English by each driver guide or an on board narration system.  The narration will point out the sights, highlights and history of the areas you travel through.

11. How long is the tour if I do not get off?

Answer: 1 hour and 20 minutes (80 minutes).

12. Are there restrooms on board each trolley?

Answer: There are no restrooms on each trolley, but there are restrooms available at stops 1, 3, 4,6,7,8 and 10.

13. The trolleys look open; are we exposed to the weather?

Answer: Only if you want to be.  There are three sections on each trolley to choose from: fully enclosed, partially protected; and fully open with a roof overhead.

14. Is there a handicapped wheelchair lift available?

Answer: Yes, several of the trolleys are wheelchair lift equipped

15. Are tours ever cancelled because of inclement weather or for any other reason?

Answer: Tours will not be cancelled due to rain.

16. Do the stops ever change or are the tours rerouted?

Answer: Due to major events downtown and thus major traffic congestion and/or closed streets, occasional rerouting is necessary.  If a change in routing is required we attempt to implement such a change at the beginning of each day thus ensuring that you can reboard the trolley at the same location you may have disembarked from it.  We attempt to have signage at each stop every day and thus the normal stops are signed as well as the temporary stops when a reroute is required.

17. I am staying near the Convention Center, and I want to start the Hop-On Hop-Off tour from Pioneer Courthouse Square.  How do I get to and from there?

Answer:   The MAX Light Rail Line provides transportation ($2.50 per person) from four Eastside Stations to Pioneer Courthouse Square. Three different lines serve the stations to Pioneer Courthouse Square so board any of the west bound trains headed to Downtown Portland.  The Blue and Red Lines will bring you right to the Square whereas the Green Line will result in a 1 block walk to the Square.

The trains run approximately every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays and every 15 to 20 minutes on weekends and holidays, but because you can use any one of the three lines servicing the Convention Center Station, the wait is rarely longer than 5 minutes.

The stations starting from the furthest East, their addresses, the transit times and number of stops to Pioneer Courthouse Square are as follows:

Lloyd Center/NE11th Ave – NE Holladay & NE 11th – 16 minutes – 8 stops on Blue and Red lines, 6 stops on Green line.

NE 7th Ave – NE Holladay & NE 7th – 14 minutes – 7 stops on Blue and Red lines, 5 stops on Green line.

Convention Center Station – NE Holladay and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd – 13 minutes – 6 stops on Blue and Red lines, 5 stops on Green line.

Rose Quarter Transit Center Station – 47 NW Holladay – 11 minutes – 5 stops on Blue and Red lines, 4 stops on Green line.

18. I am staying near the Convention Center, and I want utilize the Max Light Rail Train to join the Hop-On Hop-Off Tour at Stop #8.  How do I get to and from there?

Answer:The MAX Light Rail Line provides transportation ($2.50 per person) from four Eastside Stations to our Stop 8 which also known as the MAX Old Town/Chinatown Station (located at NW 1st Street and Davis Street). Three different lines serve the stations on the east side of the river, but only two of those lines go to the Old Town/Chinatown Station on the west side of the river. Thus board only a Blue or Red Line west bound train headed to Downtown Portland.

The trains run approximately every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays and every15 to 20 minutes on weekends and holidays, but because you can use either of the two lines servicing Old Town/Chinatown, the wait is rarely longer than 10 minutes.

The stations starting from the furthest East, their addresses, the transit times and number of stops to the Old Town/Chinatown Station is as follows:

Lloyd Center/NE11th Ave – NE Holladay & NE 11th – 10 minutes – 3 stops.

NE 7th Ave – NE Holladay & NE 7th – 8 minutes – 2 stops.

Convention Center Station – NE Holladay and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd – 6 minutes – 1 stop.

Rose Quarter Transit Center Station – 47 NW Holladay – 4 minutes – next stop.

We would recommend that your start your tour at Pioneer Courthouse Square to avoid any layover time that the tour has at that location.  See above for directions to Pioneer Court House Square.
