“To a certain type of tourist, Portland can seem intimidating.
Ours is a comparatively small city, a friendly, clean place with ample and easy to navigate public transportation.
But some out of towners, drawn here by our great food, majestic scenery and funky shopping, do not ride a bus or a train back home and do not understand that most of the homeless people and panhandlers they’ll run into as they maneuver through our fair city merit sympathy, not fear.
I call this variety of tourist “my mom.” David Beagle and David Duncan have a plan for her.
This spring, these two veterans of the tourism industry started “Big Pink Sightseeing,” a hop-on, hop-off tour that offers sightseers willing to spend $24 an easy way to see the city’s major, mainstream attractions. One dollar from each ticket will go to breast cancer research, thus the pink.”
